14 days of Blogmas: Christmas Day Starters

One of the things I look forward to most about Christmas day (second to the cheese board) are the starters. So I thought I would share my favourite festive starters, covering all diets.

Prawn cocktail is probably the most traditional option, being super easy and light it makes the ideal starter.

All you need is: cocktail prawns, thousand island dressing, paprika, lettuce and fresh bread (I opt for wholemeal).

To make it just: cook the prawns, place the lettuce in your glass/serving bowl top with prawns, dressing and a dusting of paprika. Serve alongside fresh bread and butter.

Goats cheese salad is one of my favourite things, change on or two things up and you can turn something summery into something wintery.

All you need is: goats cheese, walnuts, cranberry jelly, rocket, pecans, olive oil, honey and lemon juice.

To make it just: mix 2 tbsp of cranberry jelly, olive oil and lemon juice well to make the dressing. Grill the goats cheese. Cover the pecans in honey then roast. Place the rocket leaves on your plate then top with everything else.

Red onion and mushroom tarts are easy to make and full of flavour, while they make take a little while to get going once cooked they’re great.

All you need is: chestnuts, mushrooms, red onion, filo pastry, butter and balsamic vinegar.

To make it just: roast the chestnuts then peel off the skin and finely dice. Place in a saucepan with finely diced mushrooms and onions adding butter and balsamic vinegar. Line a muffin tray with pastry then blind bake. Fill with the mixture then bake further until crisp.

Dairy free

Smoked salmon toasts are an easy way to start your Christmas dinner off with an element of elegance.

All you need is: smoked salmon, fresh bread, olive oil, clementines and watercress.

To make it just: Fry the bread in olive oil until crisp, top with slices on smoked salmon then a few segments of clementines, finishing with watercress
